Highclere Castle

For those of us that were and are Downton Abbey fans, it was a lot of fun to take this tour. The countryside was beautiful. First, we stopped at the Witney Farm which was used for most of the farm scenes in Downton Abbey. We then stopped in the village of Bampton where the wedding scenes were filmed and the Crawley House. Then it was on to the Castle. The property is now about 5000 acres. We got to tour the Castle but were not allowed to take any photos while inside…darn. It really is as beautiful inside as shown on the show. Quite a financial undertaking to keep the Castle in good shape. Luckily I got to take the last public tour. There will be some months of private tours. The public tours usually see 1200 people a day while the private tours will only handle about 60.

Some cute little ducks at the farm.
The next several photos are from inside the farm house.
Cool stove.
Bread Pudding recipe. Sorry about the glare.
Wouldn’t like to go up and down these stairs.
Church in Bampton where Downton Abbey weddings were filmed.
House used as the Crawley House.
Sheep on the grounds of the Castle. There are 5,000.
